Achieving gender equality throughout the world............
Barbara Walters did a story on gender roles in Kabulseveral years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked about 10 paces behind their husbands.
She returned to Kabul recently and observed that the men now walked several paces behind their wives. Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and said, "This is marvelous. Can you tell the free world just what enabled women to achieve this reversal of roles?"
"Land mines," said the woman.

Sadly this has an authentic feel about it believe it or not. I met a chap the other day in Dhaka, and he was telling me that socialisation was such that when he was a kid he always used to wonder why women and girls sat near the front of the bus. He couldn't figure it out. Then one day he did. It was like that, he figured, because incase there was a crash, women and girls would die first.....
